Riding disciplines involve muscle and movement patterns that are very different to what your body is accustomed to and so riding by itself, though demanding is not going to give you the endurance, strength or flexibility required in polo.
On the horse we look for symmetry but riding actually creates asymmetrical strength and tightness due to the way your muscles are used and your body position. Off the horse this can result in muscle imbalance, ligament and tendon strains and other related injuries. It’s important to address your posture on and off the horse. Imbalance in you will result in imbalance in your horse! Remember you work as a connected unit.
Polo fitness specific training is concerned with increasing rotational strength and control through the ankle, knee and hip joints allowing for balance and symmetry in the upper body in order for you to deliver the perfect swing all the time.
On top of specific training for posture and flexibility polo fitness programmes also include a variety of strength and cardiovascular fitness approaches to get you in the best shape possible both in and out of the saddle.
Pre-season training and then training in between matches once the season has kicked is the best approach. It will allow you to work your body functionally, using movements that take it through its full range of motion and resulting in good posture, alignment and ultimately better performance on and off the pitch.
Polo fitness with Kieran is available for individuals, pairs and teams in mid and South Somerset.
